“solidarity before criticism' means the end of criticism…”

                                                                                 -- Edward Said

Aesthetic, political and social realities shift, but they always bind, or contain, the production of culture. To make, or to express, is often to transgress these realities and, therefore, to subvert them. "The subversive producer of culture identifies the limits and then creates friction between what is and what should be."

In this exhibition, culture is friction. The artists tried to understand and resist the censorship of the state or the self. How does the artist prevail over (or evade) silence? To what end does the artist work? In this two-person show, artists Annemarie Jacir (Salt of This Sea) and Nidal El-Khairy (nidalelkhairy.blogspot.com) explored public expression and self-censorship in the context of political resistance.
