Residency

Well, its actually been a month in Holland to-date.

I am in a quiet city in the north of the Nethrlands, in Hoorn! Yes I agree, a strange name that insinuates different things.

None-the-less, Hotel MariaKapel HMK is the art space hosting me for 2.5 months to focus on the my research and actaully, this place it the perfect space for concentration.

My adventures to date of coarse included bicycles, which are so much fun, as long as you don't fall off in the middle of a busy tourist area straight on your butt!

Conversations around citizenship and the relationship between the inhabitants of Amman to their city has been a topic dwelled on many times in the past years. Ideas and theories related to the city and the public space in light of urban development / regeneration, gentrification, regional and social politics are all heavily discussed, raising questions about citizenship and ultimately reflecting on how people identify with and develop a sense of ownership to their city.

Residency Tom Bogaert 2010

Dear Makan - First off: thanks again for having me!  It has been three weeks since I started my residency and everything has been great so far: the colleagues, the conversations, the food, the studio and the art...

Jordan arts

Ammar Khammash is better-known for his stunning interpretation of the unique landscapes of Jordan. His technique has a distinct quality in that he uses mixed media, including chalk, pencil and pigments along with oil colours on canvas. Drawing and paintings both hold strong grounds to bring the final image together.

Culture stands very close in relation to art (nothing new in claiming that) and that is what we had a good glimpse of in a series of exhibition openings that took place on april 16th 2009 in Jabal Luweibdeh between 3 locations: Makan, Dar Al Anda and Darat Al Funun. Ranging from paintings, to musical performances, the atmosphere in the street was very exciting. What I liked most about the exhibitions was that they really did expand the idea of what an arts organization can present.
